Job Description

Principal Mechanical Engineer

To undertake a full range of engineering activities in line with all relevant process, quality and other requirements, supplying specialist advice and support across projects and to other functions as appropriate

The successful candidate will have the following skills and knowledge:
Significant practical experience and/or suitable vocational qualificatiion
Experience across all aspects of a single engineering area/domain and an appreciation of other areas
Able to work from first principles
Specialist knowledge in at least one area; possibly recognised (or beginning to be recognised) as an expert
Good working experiences in more than one phase of the engineering life cycle, with sufficient experience of the total life cycle to ensure a good understanding of adjacent phases and through-life engineering issues
Commercial and financial awareness; able to manage budgets
Understanding of business strategy
Capable of managing projects/work packages
People and team management capabilities
Able to mentor other, more junior staff, as appropriate
Able to deal with multiple issues, tasks and priorities concurrently
Good understanding of other parts of the business
Substantial analytical and problem solving skills
Knowledge of the competition and suppliers
Knowledge of customer and user requirements
Full understanding of relevant engineering and quality standards
Communicates verbally and in writing in a style appropriate to the audience; proven presentation skills
Organisational/co-ordination experience; ability to work with and through others
Up to date knowledge of all issues in relevant specialist area(s)

The successful candidate will have the following accountabilities:
Evaluate technical issues in order to develop proposals for investigations and/or solutions, including process improvements.
Participate fully in developing, maintaining and modifying engineering processes and procedures in assigned areas in response to technical developments and operational need.
Carry out a full range of technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability.
Prepare a full range of specifications, develop designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards, and carry out design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained.
Carry out investigations into a full range of problems, issues or developments and develop and prepare solutions, individually or as a member of a project team.
Define testing approaches and specify tests in assigned/specialist area(s) and evaluate and make recommendations based on results, including making suggestions to improve test/diagnosis processes.
Lead engineering support activities in the field (and carry out the most complex activities) for specific products and customers to ensure the operability of MBDA products.
Plan, control and deliver assigned projects or work packages, and make an input as required to cross-functional projects/investigations, ensuring requirements are delivered to plan.
Carry out team planning, risk management and quality activities in assigned areas in line with all requirements and processes.
Participate in collaborative ventures at a technical level.
Act as the main point of contact with customers (internal and external) and/or suppliers and collaborators in assigned areas on engineering matters, to resolve a full range of problems and issues and to maintain an awareness in both parties of priorities and objectives.
Lead, for assigned programmes, the production of documentation to support the in-service use of products.
Provide effective support to customers in assigned areas, delivering solutions to meet the customer\'s needs and requirements plus the programme plan.
Support the identification of business opportunities and the preparation of bids in area(s) of expertise to facilitate the development of the highest quality bids.
Keep up to date in relevant technical areas, develop skills and capabilities to be able to provide more effective services (seeking and sharing good practice and knowledge to continuously improve practices), and supply technical support and expertise to others as required.
Manage assigned budgets and lead, develop and motivate assigned staff to ensure they are aware of and capable of delivering their accountabilities.
Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.
Take responsibility for design authority as appropriate.
Provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working and their development.
Ensure team size and capability mix is optimised for successful delivery of work packages and projects.
Manage and report against the team\'s work programmes, including analysis of risk, to ensure the team delivers its accountabilities.

Successful candidates will be required to be security cleared prior to appointment.
